With The Economist declaring that distributed ledger technology could fundamentally transform how the economy as a whole works, and the recent news that 42 of the world's top tier banks have now joined a consortium aiming to develop consistent standards and protocols for this technology across the financial industry, it is difficult to dismiss the interest in blockchain as a passing trend. Earlier this year, techUK held a seminar that sought to look beyond the hype and assess blockchain's potential, cautiously concluding that its use in the financial sector could represent a considerable step forward for an industry that desparately needs to reengineer itself.
